Agree with all above that any of Nevil Shute's are well worth a read - my favourites are "The Rainbow and the Rose" and "The Far Country" but they're all good. Try Kate Atkinson as well - her latest "one Good Turn" is a great read as well as good introduction to Edinburgh!

Quintin Jardine and Ian Rankin. Both very good, Edinburgh-based policemen. Probably best to start with Jardine's Skinner as he is more sanitised and middle-class than Rankin's Rebus.

Try the Diana Gabaldon "Outlander" series. Sometimes the first one is called "Outlander" and othertimes its called "Cross Stitch.
You might also like the "Left Behind" series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins if you haven't already read them. They are usually in the Christian Fiction section of book shops. They are fiction but quite thought provoking. I must admit that I only got as far as book 12 and them I'm afraid I found I wasn't enjoying them as much so stopped reading them.
