I read the Philip Pullman Dark Materials Trilogy and for me, the second book, The Subtle Knife (I think!) made me cry more than I ever have watching a film or reading anything else. Of course, me saying what made me cry may spoil things for anyone reading them at the moment! If you are, look away now!!!!
The moment Lee Scorseby and his hare daemon Hester died together in battle... I practically turned myself inside out crying, which just went to show how attached to these characters I became and what an amazing story it was. Thoroughly amazing.

"Love Story" makes me cry every time I read it. Also Martin Luther King's biography written by his wife.

Days of grace by Arthur Ashe. the open letter to his daughter , the last chapter in the book, is so loving and guiding ; honest and wise.He wrote it knowing in all likelihood he would not live to see her reach adulthood. I have mentioned this book before;it tackles the problems of racism, expectations/lavck of them in society; the stigma of HIV/aids - although thankfullythe outlook is improved for those who have access to early diagnosis and treatment now. I really recommend this book . It will make you think, and very likely cry at times too.

Time for Bed by David Baddiel.
Yes he is a comedian, and in places the book is really funny but it was very moving in places.

Anything by D.H.Lawrence. The torture of reading 500 words where one is needed just has me weeping until I give up half way down page one.

Another vote for Captain Correlli's Mandolin - the film was a travesty. I was shocked at how traumatic I found the tragedy - it's difficult to explain without spoiling it for those who haven't yet read it. If you haven't - do. The sense of heading towards a situation you know is coming but can't believe it will actually materialise...
The film sentimentalised the ending too. But that's Hollywood for you, I guess.

I'm with Stew and Emma on this...fantastic book. I made a point of not watching the film as I have my own idea in my head about what the characters look like.
Sobbed my eyes out reading it (twice).
If you haven't read it, do - it's well worth it.
