The lifts at the Derby Royal are horrible! I use the stairs whenever I can. I always think I'll catch something nasty in them!

Not been a fan of elevators / lifts since I was in the glass one that goes up the outside of the CN Tower in Toronto with some daft Japanese tourist who freaked out and had a panic attack. The kids want me to take them up the millenium tower in Portsmouth, as the lift on that packed up on its first day I think I'll be giving it a miss..

My young grandson sat on the floor of that lift, playing with the screws that hold the glass viewing piece in place.
Thankfully , I wasnt in the lift, I wandered around the Blue Jays shop instead. Neither did I go on the helicopter that flies over the falls.
And I havent been up the tower in Blackpool either, and have no intention of.
I went in a lift at the Botanay Bay shopping centre, it creaked and groaned and spluttered its way to the 4th floor......................I walked back down !

I was once in a lift with a mate of mine in a 34 storey building. As we went up I started jumping up and down causing the lift to do strange hopping motions. He was sick with fear and I was sick from laughing. People often say that they "cried laughing" and I actually did! I don't like heights, small spaces, people who jump up and down in lifts, chimps.......... I thought you were going to say "died laughing".....but, never mind.....

anybody who works for a lift company will tell you that they can't fall......still don't believe them... Lifts can fail, but there are so many backup systems - both electrical and mechanical - that only through vandalism can problems arise. Lift can and do breakdown, down to electrical or more likely mechanical failure, and it is the backup systems that stop the lift for safety reasons. In a normal 6 person lift, there is 6 high tension wires that support the lift. Each one of these wires is capable of supporting the lift and full load itself. If the power fails on a lift then there is a brake that come on when the power is removed from it (this is used every time the lift is stopped at a floor). If by some chance all the ropes failed (they are inspected regularly for wear as a condition for the building's insurance) then there is an independent mechanical brakes on the lift which will bite right into the guide rails once the lift reaches a specified speed above its normal running speed.

i,ve seen lifts being serviced and its amazing how thin the steel cables can be,but despite those fail safes... lifts have plunged to the bottom and people have been killed..maybe they were lifts fitted before todays 'buffer' type systems.
i,ve just rendered lift manufacturers shares absolutely worthless!!!!
