I think the green gardener website was mentioned on another thread a few days ago but I can't find it. It is useful for those who like me don't really like using pesticides and stuff. Also you can purchase things that attract good insects to your garden, like ladybirds. www.greengardener.co.uk

Thanks for that Cheesy...I was watching Gardener's World on Friday and was interested in the slug nematode things he was using and it's on there.

Those slug things work a treat I don't like using slug pellets because not only do they poison the slug they also poison anything that eats them, I'm thinking hedgehogs.

Slug pellets came close to killing three of my dogs - and a slow and agonising death it would have been if I hadn't spotted what they'd done just after they'd done it and the vet was very quick to intervene. I don't know how they can remain legal - it makes no sense at all.
If you save a load of egg shells, break them up into fairly small pieces and cook them in the oven until they are very dry, maybe half an hour at 180 degrees C, then sprinkle them around vulnerable plants, they act as an effective barrier for several weeks.

Funnily enough when Monty was watering the nemetodes in he also had egg-shells round some of the lettuces.
He also nailed a copper pipe round the edge of the raised bed as he said for some reason slugs and snails wn't cross it. Apparently it gives them some sort of shock. It actually looked ok along the top of the wood.

Slugs and snails also hate soot. Put round the base of plants deters them. It has to be weathered first as it will burn the plants. Thanks for that link.

Sharp sand round the plants works too, and if you sink a container in the ground (has to be quite deep) near the plants and fill it with beer that works too ......and they die happy!
