I've grown stuff in hanging baskets in the past and have just been talking to a mate who was in the garden centre getting stuff for hers. She was wondering if she had too many or not enough. Now I said to her that I had read or heard somewhere that the more you cram into the basket the better, and she said she thought less!
Has anyone any experience of either? I would have thought maybe it depends on the plant?

PML always crams as much in as possible and has a lovely show of baskets every year. He was told by an old gardener that that was the way to plant them.

FIL always crammed them in tigh and had the most fantastic show ever. There are some plants - Surfinias(?) where you only need 3 or 4 plants for a great show.

I planted my wall pots earlier in March, Petunias, Bizzie Lizzies and Marigolds.
The Petunias seem to be the best out of the lot so far as they've filled the pot and the others haven't.
Back to the garden centre to get some more plants lol.

Mostly, as long as they are fed, fill your boots so to speak!

I'm a basket crammer, but not with surfinas. They do make a good show, but it's too brief for my liking - they then go straggly, at which point you can either cut them back and wait for several weeks until they fill the basket again or choose something like pendulous begonias which remain more compact and, with a bit of TLC, flower for months. I also like to mix different flowers and foliage plants, so that the baskets change 'mood' over summer.

I've just put some of those trailing begonias into a basket - I have a memory of you identifying it from a bit I nicked from a pub window box! That never took but I got the proper corms this year so have my fingers crossed. Looks like only 2 are growing so might add some fushias.
