I've been watching the buds on my roses beginning to swell and the first one out is the lovely Rosa 'Margaret Merrill' (1977). It's right by the front door which suits me because it has a really lovely powerful, yet delicate perfume. The blooms are a clear white with a pinkish tinge in the centre. However, my plant is prone to black spot. I don't think I've had a rose bloom so early. Here is a picture I've just taken. I'm sure other people have roses in bloom. Can you please tell us about them, and preferably show us pictures of them?

This is my first one of the year, I think it's 'Love Surprise' but I could be wrong, it's been known many times before

This is my first one of the year, I think it's 'Love Surprise' but I could be wrong, it's been known many times before I can't find anything called Love Surprise my dear - not in David Austin or Peter Beale's catalogue. But what a lovely rose it is. Does it have any purfume? Can you tell us any more about it? It has rich, glossy leaves. Is it a bush and a hybrid tea or so the buds come in bunches? Thanks for showing it to us.

My climbing 'Iceberg' only really had a breather! It flowered until around the end of Feb, albeit with no leaves (I counted 26 roses in January) and the first one came out a few days ago with lots of buds. I'll try and take a pic.

Since it's you, your Reverendshipness, I've been and foraged around in the pot for its label. It's definitely called Love Surprise, it's a bush, and it's a floribunda. It has a scent to it, but not a strong one. The only other thing I can tell you about it with any degree of certainty is that it's got decidedly vicious thorns

But it looks very nice in your photo.
