It's a very good set of suggestions - thanks Carl. One I would add is to use old plastic cartons etc, that so much food comes packaged in, as seed trays. A fairly deep one that comes with a lid, it is as good as any non-heated propagator. If the central heating is on - place it above a radiator and then it will be as good as most bottom heated propagators. If it doesn't have a lid use plastic wrap instead.

I use egg boxes (the cardboardy ones) to sow seeds. They have the advantage of disintigrating when you plant them out so you can bung the whole lot in the ground. Helpful for stuff that doesn't take well to being potted on.

I use broken polystyrene in the bottom of tubs. Its good for drainage, saves on compost and is nice and light.

I have germinated courgettes in the airing cupboard, in plastic tubs, put into plastic bags.

toilet rolls are also good for growing things that don't like their roots to be disturbed, such as sweet peas

Usefull site, thank you. I use the big brightly coloured lids from the lenor/comfort, fabric softener bottles, to put cuttings and single seeds in. They are easy to remove plantlets from, and look bright on the shelf in the greenhouse. Can't recycle them in the bins and i hate chucking them.
