I have various packets of tomato, cucumber, and beetroot seeds and I was wondering if I have left it too late to try growing from seed? Should I bite the bullet and buy in some plug plants?

The seed packets should have advice about planting and harvesting. And, if you're growing the cucumbers and tomatoes in a greenhouse, if it's heated that will extend the cropping period. Having said that, if this is going to be a long hot summer, then they may do all right outside. I would have thought that beetroot would be fine - I've harvested them even after the first frosts - they may not grow as big as you wish, but the flavour should be OK.

I sowed my beetroot outside a couple of weeks ago and I'm a lot further north than you are. I had a fantastic crop last year. The carrots have just gone in too should be ready for the first harvest of baby carrots in July/August.

Yay! I do get a real sense of satisfaction from growing things from seed.

You are lucky! I cannot grow anything from seed! I just don't have the knack! I prefer my plants to come as plug plants get more satisfaction there! Love TT xxxx
