I have found this which seems that it may help as it contains the active weedkiller well away from animals.

I have had a problem with bindweed and have a nice new system which is working well. I place a cane near the weed to give it something to grow up. Then when I am ready I unwind it from the cane and poke it into a poly bag. Once in I spray in side with roundup and then tie the bag at the top and leave it in the flower bed. After a couple of weeks the bags can be picked up and the bindweed is dead. I have found this the least labour intensive way to deal with the problem and I am winning the battle. Diane
Or this:
Years ago on Gardeners' World, Geoff Hamilton suggested gathering up stems of the stuff and dunking it in a bucket of glyphosate solution and leaving it.. The leaves then take the poison back to the roots and the plant dies. You need to wear rubber gloves. This method ensures a good take up of the poison and no spray on treasures.
If you just cover the plant or pull off the visible stems the roots left in the ground simply spread around till they find somewhere to send new shoots into daylight. I've tried the dunking technique and it works and I've cleared a large patch. The only regrowth is in a bog side plant that my husband always "weeds" just before I get there with the bucket. Bless you Carl I think I will try the poly bag as the cat and dog won't go in there (I hope)! I do have problems mixing quantities of liquid but thanks for those solutions I may be able to get a sighted friend to put the other idea into a bucket and soak it. Love & Hugs TT xxxx
