I don't mean the garden kind necessarily. I'm involved with the Ancient Tree Hunt which is being organised by the Woodland Trust and hopes to record all the Ancient and Notable trees as well as trees that have that 'certain something' about them, whether it's local legend or its shape, in the UK and record them on an interactive map.
For more info have a look at the website

Seriously though, I know I didn't read the whole thing, but I didn't see anything on the website about patches, so is it that formalised? It's a great idea and I wouldn't mind using it as an excuse to wander the Arbuthnot estate - going much further than that at the moment isn't really an option.

Lucy, Try the Big Tree (I think they call it that) at Scone Palace. Apparently it was the first Douglas Fir imported into Britain. Here's a piccie of the trunk - I just liked the patterns in the bark:

The bearded man in the bark could be the original green man!

Basically anyone can register on the website and record their favourite big/old/special trees anywhere in the country. Once the tree is recorded the next step is that it's verified as being all that the recorder says it is - that's where I come in as a verifier. Only Verifiers are allocated patches/counties - mine happens to be Angus. The whole thing is UK wide and we want people to look for these big/old/special trees and record them since many of them are at risk for a variety of reasons. The project is run by the Woodland Trust with some funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It makes walking just a bit more interesting.

The bearded man in the bark could be the original green man! What? Titchmarsh? Monty Don? Douglas Fir? David Cameron? Looks more like a cross between Sigmund Freud and George Bernard Shaw .. ;D ;D ;D

As a child I used to go climbing on what I thought was this huge tree near a mini-canal ... and *ahem* number years later it is still there, still huge but no one is allowed to climb on it
