I found these books useful with lots of good advice for novice gardeners. They are relatively cheap from garden centres and you can just get the one's you want...eg, veg and herb, fruit, bulbs, water gardens, bulbs etc.

Ooh, good point, Lily! You've reminded me that I haven't got the water gardens one - must pick it up next time I'm at the garden centre. I've got several of the others, bought in a panic when we first had a garden to look after! I found them very helpful.

Thought they were worth a mention as the titles are somewhat misleading...they are most definitely not for 'experts'!!!

Hessayon's books are marvellous, they have so much information, and it's all put in a basic way so that it's easy to look at. I can remember my Mum having them on the bookshelf in the '70's , and they're still relevant today. Here's a link for you: www.gardenwriters.co.uk/awards/2005/2kpress03.html

I think I read somewhere that Hessayon is the best-selling author in the world.

I think they are great too. I find the rose edition really informative.

xxx I agree, they are probably the best gardening books around. Good for identifying plants and every thing is easy to understand - whether you're an old hand or a complete novice.

Must admit I think the pictures are a Godsend for identifying stuff...much better than a description or drawing!
Especially weeds, pests and different diseases...you can actually see what to look for.

xxx Although I do agree with you in this case Lil, don't you think that some of the old fashioned drawings of plants are lovely?
