Dora I love bougainvillea.
Do you think I could get it to grow in Caversham?
I am a lot closer to the Med than you are!!!

Gorgeous Dora, we had one covering our front fence where we lived in Oz -- that plus a jasmine for its scent as people went through the gate. I love the colour of yours - it's 'proper' Bougainvillea colour rather than the red variety.

I am a lot closer to the Med than you are!!! Yes you could - by growing it in a large pot and bringing it inside for winter. Or, if you have a heated conservatory one would do very well inside all year round.

I may just try to get one and give it a go.

I am a lot closer to the Med than you are!!! Yes indeed Ivy, you are closer to the Med than I am at this moment. However, the bougainvillea is on the Algarve which is just a tiny bit closer to the Med than Caaaaaversham! ;D As Fi has quite rightly said, they can be grown here in a Conservatory, if you have one. This one took years to get going. We thought it was dead a few times. Then last June when we arrived, this is what awaited us and it took our breath away. We'll be back in a couple of weeks and I have it on good authority that it's in full bloom. Can't wait!

I vaguely remember someone telling me in Africa (must have been during one of my rare sober moments!) that if you want to change the colour of your bougainvillea, you should bury a few rusty nails near the roots. I have no idea whether or not it works, even less idea of what colour changes to what, but it might be worth a try ..

So you never know.

I lived in Darwin, N.T. Australia for a year. Every year they had a bougainvillea festival. There were lots of floats decorated with the flowers, and all ages dressed up in themed costumes. Can't remember if that was the same day as the beer can regatta. At the regatta, they had to drink as many tinnies as the could, to make rafts they could float in the sea. This enabled them to race rafts in the sea and to mark the end of the sea wasps season. Just thought I would tell you, no reason really!
