I have a large expanse of garden I can do nothing with! I was wondering if any Togs could help with ground cover ideas that would be cheap and cheerful and thrive on neglect, not total bit would need very little looking after and would come up yearly. Thanks Love TT xxxx

Vinca - but beware it can invade big time. One of the ground hugging Cotoneasters would work over time. Micro something or other.

In my bit of 'bung it in and ignore it' garden I have pulmonaria (good for a bit of colour in the spring) campanula and a selection of geraniums.
The best part of it is that they've all come as chunks of 'spare plant' from friend's gardens, so they're a lovely way of thinking of friends that you might not catch up with as often as you want to.
Maybe we should all sneak up under cover of darkness and plant something in your garden!

Thanks Love TT xxxx Campanula Poscharskyana - plant and stand back sharply! Hypericum Calycinum (Rose of Sharon) - but only if you never intend planting anything else on the site ever!

It depends on how big the space is and how do you use it. Also, you don't explain why you can do nothing with it - whatever is causing that must be fundamental to deciding what to do with the site. If you want to walk in it, then grass and a path made of flagstones or whatever might do the trick - or chamomile lawn that smells lovely when it's walked on, but it won't stand up to a lot of use. Some of the smaller thymes would serve the same purpose. Both need mowing, but nowhere near as often as grass. But if you donn't want to walk in the area but you do want a real splash of colour, Dianthus deltoides varieties are hard to beat and can easily be grown fom seed. Cultivated Lamiums have a wide range of leaf colour, and Vincas, as Carl mentioned can look superb. One other thought is instead of having ground covers, why not get a packet of three of wildflower seeds? They just need cutting once a year and they would attract wildlife.

Periwinkle is good but can choke everything else! Sedum, campunula, Saxifrage are other possibilities.
