No, not Jamie Oliver's thingy...real ones! Maybe I was lucky but ours were, on the whole, fine.
I was at school in the 60's and 70's and we had meals of the 'meat and 2 veg' type. I still remember a steak pie that had a suet pastry crust, but was baked so the top was crispy...yummy. Also mince with raw grated carrot and a square of shortcrust pastry on top (what was that about?).
Must admit I hated salad then, just soggy lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber and bread and cheap marg...yuk!
One thing for sure...we never saw burgers and chips!
Any other faves/hates in the memory?

I actually quite liked school dinners on the whole too, Lil. We used to get fish and chips occasionally on a Friday but like you it was mainly meat and 2 veg and some kind of pudding, usually with wonderful pouring custard. The only time we didn't get custard was when we had rice pudding or semolina, and that was usually with prunes! This was at primary school and there was no choice - one menu only. Not bad for 5bob a week! My sister paid 4/7d and my brother paid 4/2d. If there had been any more siblings, they would have been fed for free! It also meant my mum didn't have to make us a big tea at night so we tended to have high tea. Something hot but light, like scrambled eggs and bread and butter and jam and scones or, on very special occasions perhaps an iced bun!!!!
Mind you, we did get a lot more exercise then; chucked out into the playground at break time, rain, hail or shine to run around like loonies and then playing out after tea.
In my first year at secondary school they introduced a choice - three different menus. To begin with you had to sit at a table in the row serving the menu of your choice, but that soon changed to a sort of self-service system where you had to queue up for your main course then go back and queue for pudding.
Ah yes - nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

I was really lucky with school meals. I went to a convent school and all the cooks were mums of the kids in school. Everything was made on the premises and really varied, we had Spanish, Italian and wonderful Irish Stews in winter. Mrs Fitz made the best treacle sponge on earth!

School meat pie was delicious. All our school meals were 'proper' food, served on china plates with steel cutlery and drinking water.
I was totally taken aback when I first realised that school dinners now comprise assorted junk food served up on compartmentalised plastic trays, with fizzy drinks and chocolate bars readily available.
When and how did this happen?

5 bob a week paid to the table monitor(teacher or prefect) on a Monday, we had to sit at the same table every day, 10 to a table. Each table got a pile of plates and the food came to the table to be served up by the monitor. It was a set menu and repeated every week with things like steak & kidney pudding; American Bean Pie (shepherds pie with beans in it); shepherds pie (when they ran out of beans?); Macaroni or Cauliflower Cheese and fish on Friday (the only day we had chips); Puddings were usually of the steamed variety with custard or rice or semolina and occasionally a strange looking pastry thing that need a chisel or a very garish trifle. All in all it was good wholesome food and I don't remember any of it being bad.

The meat pies! Done in the big tins, and you tried to get a corner or an edge so you got crispy pastry! And the puddings! Suet currant pud, jam roll, cornflake tart all with custard!
Tygs school in England was good, always 'proper' meals, with a kiddie alternative. They did a mean caramel slice too!

Crikey, I must be really old as I remember school dinners being 2/6d. I loved them too, especially when we had chips or roast potatoes. I was quite shy as a child (alright, I know I am not know), and as we had to sit on a table with pupils from other years, it was good socially too. What about steamed chocolate pudding with chocolate custard: treacle tart: bacon and onion suet roll. Mmmmm... thing is, unlike you Ives, my mum would make us another dinner in the evening. Ahhh... that must be why I eat such a lot now!

I must have been a very lucky tyg, I always went home for my dinner.
I can remember only having 1 , not sure what the main course was, but the pud was a white gloopy mess.
I did used to go to the school christmas parties, where every tyg had to take his/her own knife/fork/spoon, and a plate with our name stuck on the bottom!

School dinner ussualy consisted of a plate of mash some bland cabbage and gravy.
....puddings on the other hand !

Like Ives, my mum didn't make another dinner in the evening, it was usually a boiled egg, scrambled eggs, salad in summer or banana sandwiches. Must be a Scottish thing - economical Scots and all that!

Ooooooooooooooooooooooo i loved mine, excet for peese pudding!! (smelt lke sick) Best dinner for me was Italian Cobbler, like shepheards pie but with little suet pastry things on top - I can still taste it and remember the smell.
Best pudding was gypsey tart and half an apple.
We all sat aound the table and in the 5th year you had to do the service. Happy Days, thank you for reminding me. xx

Gosh.... Here I am, yet another TOG who loved their school dinners... must be why we are all still so sylph- like....
Trouble is even now..... Mince and tatties is still a favourite of mine... and what's more.... if M&T is on the menu at my school .....as I walk through the dining hall for whatever reason, before lunch time... Cook always gives me the thumbs up sign, just to let me know. Problem is... the plates are so small!

My Mum did the best ever mince with mash and frozen peas, and my Dad made the best ever meatloaf. Don't half miss them. xx
