It is a hard choice. I have decided to avoid a 'classic' this time.
I have chosen a comic novel as the first one. It is set in the 1980s and deals with love, academe, and advanced general knowledge.
'Starter for 10' by David Nicholls

I read this book a few years ago, it is an amusing light read. A good choice for starters. I have just dug it out and will re-read so I can follow the threads. However my first question is did SBW choose it because of the flyer on the back cover?
Q:What does a woman really look for in a man? A: Advanced general knowledge, of course.
Is that so? My humble offering is that we look for much more depth than that and can do fickle very well ..

I chose it because it is, as you say, an amusing light read. Heavy books may, or may not, have a place.
I have read it twice, and will read it again.
There are a number of things we can look at:
the depiction of academic life
relationships
popular culture in books as context setting
I will not be prescriptive. People can lead the topic off in all different directions.

Psst! Looking at the subject matter, I would suspect that David Nicholls is the nom de plume of a certain Sir Bumbly Wumbly.
Oh well, at least his sales will increase!

It is about 320 pages long. So I would suggest we read it and then discuss it after half-term week.
4th June anyone?

Sounds good, it should have turned up well before then and also it will give me time to finish the book I am currently reading. Anyone else going to join in? I hope so.
