I note from an article on the BBC news site that J K Rowling has 'outed' Dumbledore as gay.
I have to say that having read the last of the Potter books, this does not surprise me in the slightest. Rowling herself admits that this will make her book even less popular amongst those sections of the religious right who already consider it evil.
The additional publicity will no doubt cause no harm to the continued sales of the books, however, nor ticket sales to the movie franchise that accompanies the books.
I am uneasy, however. Is it a gimmick, a natural development of the character as revealed thus far in the previous books or just something she decided to throw in there for the hell of it?

I don't see any need to have mentioned it. Not you, JK.

I think the reason JK mentioned it, was that there'd been quite a bit of talk about it on the HP fan sites.

Does it really matter to the character now. Apart from as mentioned giving the zealots something else to grab on to. Still love the books and don't think it adds or detracts from the books in anyway

I think in terms of the subtext to the books, it does explain an awful lot. However I do agree that it should have remained almost ambiguous, something that is not put out there as an absolute certainty. Better that the reader approach it in an open-minded way and draw their own conclusions.
