Any amateur runners out there? And I really do mean amateur! I have decided to train for a half marathon in September. This is a huge task for me - so far my longest races have been 10k and fastest time 64 mins. I have decided I am never going to be a sub 45 10k-er so I might as well go for distance!
Although I enjoy running once I get started and after I finish I need bucket loads of incentive to actually get the shoes on and get out there. Following a training plan helps as I feel bad if I can't tick off the box, but having a virtual training partner would help a lot too.
If anyone is either about the same stage as me or maybe has half marathon experience who would be prepared to hold my hand through the training can you pm me? I am aiming to finish about 2:30 and am frantically hoping that is achievable.
thanks,
t2
Oh gawd, now I've put this on a public forum I can't back out.....

64 minutes for the 10k is perfectly respectable, and your estimate of 2:30 for the half-marathon ties in with sort of pace nicely. If you haven't yet discoverd the excellent magazine 'Runners World' you should ! www.runnersworld.co.uk/Good luck in September.

Well, I did it! 13.1 miles this morning.
Official time 2:30:29 which is just about bang on target.
It really did help with the training that I had posted on here and thanks to the people who PM'd me with encouraging words. There were a few times in the middle weeks that I was tempted to give up but the thought of being able to post this today kept me going.
I have two things to say:
1. To anyone thinking of setting themselves a challenge like this - go for it! Those who know me in real life would think I am the last person to be able to run a half-marathon but training plans do work. If I can do it just about anybody can.
2. To anyone who has ever run a marathon - ultimate respect! If I had crossed that line today to be told "just once more round now" I dread to think what I might have done!

Yeah, well done!
I managed 5 km (3 miles) in about 40 minutes and was being overtaken by the walkers!

Very well done t2. I'm full of admiration and a certain amount of jealousy! I used to love to run, only 10k and that was plenty but after a series of injuries have had to slow to a walk. If you were to ask for any advice [which you haven't but I'm going to give it anyway]! Just be kind to your knees and train as much as possible on tracks rather than the hard road.
