Update - we did it; Tiglet bought a second hand bike from a colleague, I found some Schwalbe tyres on the internet at around half the price that buying from Halfords would cost. Bikes sorted (amazing what pumping the tyre to the correct pressure will do). First weekend we cycled on cycle paths to a local business park built on what used to be a delightful area to walk. Now there are footpaths and nature areas including feeding stations and even a bird hide. We had a good ride around then headed back without any mishaps.
Second weekend we went a ride along canal towpaths and enjoyed ourselves though there were one of two hairy moments. I politely dismounted to pass a pair of anglers which I think surprised them. The one guy thanked me - it was more out of self preservation as a friend had messed with an angler once - ridden over the guys carbon fibre rod embedded into the hedge. My friend was riding away thinking he was in the clear when he was hit in the back of the neck by a great damp wodge of ground bait.
Got back aching but happy. Now tentatively looking for a bike rack for the Golf estate.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

No way - herself reckons the £35-00 is more than enough to spend

Bike racks -
havign started with a rear hanging one for a hatchback, we changed over onto a roof loader for two main reasons.
1 - The thrumming from the bungee cords holding the bikes on - mainly seemed to happen at 50mph and over. 2 - It was nigh impossible to get into the boot without taking the bikes off first. 3 - There was always a small layer of doubt that the bikes might fall off if there was any wobble with them. 4 - A roof loader was cheaper than a rear/sit it on the towbar one.
Okay, four reasons.

Oh dear. I'm very tired now - having read all of that.
The last time I tried riding a bike was on Rottness island off Perth, Australia in c.2001. I paid extra for a soft saddle but my rear quarters were aching like mad before I had gone very far.
I think there must be something wrong with my anatomy because I have the wrong kind of ears (those cheap headphone thingies keep falling out) and I have been given someone else's behind (because I get sore very easily on a bike - and that was before the onslaught of those dreaded piles - if you're excuse the expression). But I'm so pleased that you young things (i.e. Carl and Tiglety) are enjoying cycling in this lovely, sunny weather.

We do 'fair weather cycling' too. Nothing quite like it on a warm sunny day, stopping in the forest or on a river bank for a snack and a glug and watching the world go by before cycling onwards. Marvellous!
