Thought that this might be quite a go'er.. Name songs that you dig.. Who did them. And why you dig them.. Comment on the next post's choice of song's.. I'll start us off.
Wake up and make love with me - Ian Dury and The Blockheads. Probably the Best way to tell someone that you love them... If you know what i mean?

Wake up and make love with me - Ian Dury and The Blockheads. Probably the Best way to tell someone that you love them... If you know what i mean? Ooh, Slinky! I love talking about songs! (Did you mean comment on the last post's choice? Bit hard to comment on the next one when you don't know what it's gonna be! - I'll go with that & you can correct me if I've got the wrong idea...) I don't know much Ian Dury, but like what I have heard. Sorry I can't comment properly on this particular song. I really like 'Brother can you spare a dime' from George Michael's 'Songs from the last century' album. I love the passion & feeling in his voice & it really conjures up a picture of the depression years it was written about. (are we the only musos on here? nobody else seems to have replied so far!)

AAArrrrggghhh - you have me looking for Brother Can you.. now I think I have a very old version of it somewhere on a album - but which one? Love music from all ages from classical to big band to rock. Loved Brother etc. because it's so sad.
Same reason for REM - 'Everybody Hurts' - gets me every time - especially if I am a bit low and want a bit of a wallow.

Everybody hurts is one of my fave REM tracks! The video was genius.
On a slightly lighter & much newer note, I really like Wolfmother's 'Woman' - they're a modern band with a really old, rocky feel - remind me a bit of Led Zep. Seen 'em live & they were excellent!

REM are probably the reason that Mussic didn't fall into an abiss in the 90's.. Everybody hurts is a real pull your heart out through ya chest and kick it down the road kinda song. Gets me everytime too..
Rachmaninov Rhapsody on the theme of Paganini.. Reduces me to tears whenever i hear it... Doesn't matter where i am.. The most wonderfull piece of music.. And understanding why he wrote it. What took him to that place... Well it just amaze's me..
think that possibley we maybe the only musso on here..

Will listen out for both your numbers. There may be more, when others check in - even so, three is good for starters - I love my music and am at present playing the Elbow 'Seldom Seen Kid' and new new Coldplay album Viva (apparently not cool to like this one but I do) - love both albums so far - I only got them yesterday.
Back on the maudlin front, Verdi's Requiem - Lacrymosa - ooohhh brings me to tears, amazing piece of music. On a lighter note - In The Summertime by Mungo Jerry. Maybe we could ask the mods for a music section, where we can indulge ourselves - and recommend stuff?

Saw Coldplay do two off the new album on Jonathan Ross last night - really good & thinking of getting the album. Love the Mungo Jerry track, but boy! weren't those lyrics sexist!! (If her Daddy's rich, take her out for a meal, if her Daddy's poor, just do what you feel!) Have you heard "I can't stand the rain" by Missy Elliot? Not normally an artist I listen to but her version of this is really good. Also love The Feeling album - 12 stops & home. Lovely voice & lyrics & hard to choose a fave track as they're all so good.

Haven't heard the Miss Ellito track but will listen out for it.. The original was so damn good hard to imagin anyone bettering it.
The feeling are one of my favourite bands and 12 stops home is nearly always on the c.d player..
I'v had to trawl through some old stuff just recently to pick out some tracks for a funneral. Memory lane is a wonderful place to be Captain Beef herat...Man what a band Small face's were almost a perfect as you can get
But Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty as the Humblebums just blew my mind all over again Come drink my wine is what i'd call a perfect song.. Billy can really sing when he puts his mind to it.

I always cringe when Billy starts singing on that travel programme of his - but maybe with Gerry Rafferty involved he could sound ok - Gerry has a lovely voice. I, too, love Small Faces, which reminds me of....
The Faces - early Rod Stewart is quite wonderful. Cindy Incidently always reminds me of my childhood & early teens - what a voice!

Thinking of youth... One song that always reminds me of being young and for some reason or the long hot summer of 76 is Mickey Gilley's Hey did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world.. Stange how songs take you back.
Think that the idea of a music board is a good one.. Cause this is nither game nor competition. And like you Dinah.. Talking about music that i love or am in the throws of falling in love with is a favourite passtime..

If we had a Music Board we could also do reviews of albums we have bought & our fave tracks off them & why.

I've read all your posts on here , but it is all too modern for me, However I agree that if you had a music board, you could really get into each others music. Why don't you ask Ivy about it?

Aww Lou... Sorry honey would you like to see my counrty music colletion? Everything that Jonny Cash ever made.. Including The Highway Men. Most of Willie Nelson... Am on the look out for his very early stuff. Everything that Bob Dylan has ever done. (pluss some art work and oringinal poetry). I am his greatest fan. Quite a bit of Woody Guthrie. Obviously. See above.. Bobby Darrin to my mind put Frank Sinatra in the shade. Also him live at the sands on original L.P and alot of his other stuff. Sammy Davis Jr. Nothing 'short' of a micrical for a one eyed window cleaner. Nina Simone... The Lady Day Sonny Boy Williamson The who i could go on and obviosly realise that they are not all counrty music. But we is just getting started on this thread.. Just need a few more to join in really... HINT HINT!!!!!!

Gerry Rafferty Baker Street... Well bothered botty me. (not liturally obviously)
One of my little treats is having the house to myself, running a bath and putting on one of the lady genious's that i have... Tonight it's Madeleine Peyroux, Half the perfect world... How can someone so young sing with such emotion. And play with such perfection.. She can almost make you believe that this is a world without any uglyness...
Apart from being French she's really rather alright...

Love Coldplay, REM, Rachmaninoff etc.
Desperado by the Eagles. Played on the way home tonight and I couldn't put the car away until it had finished.
I Think it's gonna Rain Today by Bette Midler in the movie Beaches. Always stirs something in me.
And so..s..oo..ssooo many others. Just lead me to the music board. Music is one thing I'd find very hard to live without. A major part of my existence.
Thanks for this thread. Brilliant idea.

We've got that Madeleine Peyroux album too Slinky!
And Nuala - I know what you mean about listening to the end of something even after you've stopped the car - sometimes it's just too good to switch off.
There are some great female singers about just lately - any of you heard Remi Nicole? I'm really into lyrics & she does them so well. I'm also enjoying Amy MacDonald at the moment as well.
(Oh yeah - and you do know it's a myth about Bob Holness playing on Baker Street, don't you?)

I haven't heard Remi Nicole - I don't think - but will certainly listen out. Amy MacDonald is superb. What about Linda Ronstadt?
Chris Martin of Coldplay has never enamoured me with his lyrics but the music has something for me. Cool or uncool doesn't come into it as far as I'm concerned. If I like...I like.
A short while ago, I downloaded Have you Ever Been in Love by Leo Sayer. A very poignant reminder of the early 80's which I'd forgotten until STW played it one morning and I was right back there.
I like all sorts of music for all sorts of reasons. Doesn't even have to be very good as long as it strikes a chord or leaves a memory behind it. Music that leaves a bad memory is forever struck from my list. There's plenty more to latch on to with some great new stuff blossoming every day. Plus, there must be all sorts of gems out there that threads like this could introduce us to. Has anyone heard of the John Butler Trio?
Sleep well folks. I'm off to bed with some nice notes in my head.
Thank you xx
