Just Nip Round Here Quick, is a phase we've all heard,
But how many know it relates to a bird?
A bird that was born in the strange land of Tring,
Who, when he was hatched had only one wing.
His Mum called him Quick because when she brought food,
His beak was first open before the rest of the brood.
As he grew up he would look at the sky,
Just wondering how he would manage to fly.
His brothers an sisters all grew fit and strong,
And when they learned to fly tried to take him along.
He took a deep breath, jumped, and followed the rest,
But with only one wing flew straight back to the nest.
One day when the others had gone off to play,
He'd say to his Mum. "Today is the day."
"Now my one wing is stronger, I'll fly further out,
And when I get over there, I'll give you a shout."
Because he couldn't fly in a straight line,
Quick tried to aim for a far off clothes line.
It was off to his left just by an Oak Tree,
"That's where I'm going Mum, you just watch me."
He leapt off to his right with his eye on the line,
And when he got there his Mum saw he was fine.
He waved to his Mum who was still at the nest.
But to get back to her would be the big test.
He'd never fly straight, that much he knew.
But in his mind had worked out, what he needed to do.
If he started off and took it real slow,
He would slowly come round to where he wanted to go.
So that's what he did and each day grew stronger,
And all of his flights became longer and longer.
The people in town found a job for him too,
When they all saw just what he could do.
The post office asked him to help them as well,
With messages that were easy to tell.
"Quick, nip round to Mary's and tell her the news,
That the postman's delivered her new pair of shoes."
'Quick, nip round to Freddy," the Doctor would say,
"And tell him I'll call round at the end of the day."
So Quick nipped round here, and Quick nipped round there,
Though he couldn't fly straight he didn't care.
When asked to do something he promised he'd do it.
But said, "You will have to wait till I can get 'A Round Tuit'."
