I always dump them. Am I being wasteful, or do they cook up as good as the rest of it?

If they are fresh mushrooms I just take the very end bit of the stalk off and cook the rest. If they've been in the fridge a few days and gone a bit " leggy " then I cut most of the stalk off.
Just out of curiosity, do you wash mushrooms or peel them, or both ?

I cook the whole thing.
Mushrooms should never be soaked in water (unless dried), just wiped with a bit of damp kitchen towel, as they readily absorb liquid. Button mushrooms have little enough flavour as it is.
No need to peel them. That's just faffing about!
I've always eaten the whole mushroom, stalks and all. If stuffing one of those big field mushrooms, I will destalk it but will usually chop the stalk up very fine and pop it into the stuffing mixture.
When making soup or onion and mushroom gravy, I am likely to destalk and chop the stalks separately or leave them whole, according to size and thickness, and cook them all up together.
For garlic mushrooms or as a pizza topping, in risotto or bolognaise sauce, I always leave the stalks on and just slice the whole mushroom.
