I've read the novels a number of times (yes all of them) and as well as tne setting (Embra) the main appeal is Rebus himself Why?? He isnt really an attractive character and his sleep habits must make him monsterous but I miss him (bought Rankin's latest and cant give it a fair crack yet!!) Anyone else find Rebus so compelling?

Yep - haven't read them all.. but love them.
And, I don't know what it is for you.... but for me, it's seeing John Hannah in my mind's eye as I read.... and bad sleeping habits or not, I'd be happy to see his boots under me bed!
;D

I have read some of the Rebus books and enjoyed them. The setting of novels and the characters are great - Edinburgh is a character in the books as well.
When they came to making Rebus for the TV, the inital choice of John Hannah was not good. Ken Stott has turned out to be an inspired choice - he has made the role his own.

Yes!
One of the best-written, best-realised characters in popular fiction. Ever. Actually, all of Rankin's characters are incredibly well-drawn.
I love the books, mainly because my stomping ground was the Southside of Edinburgh - I lived down the road from St Leonard's! I also know some of the seamier areas referred to in the books. I also know far too many of the pubs mentioned...
John Hannah was the first actor to play Rebus, Ken Stott the second. Hannah was just not Rebus, in my mind - Ken Stott looked born to play him, in the later stories anyway. Just a darned shame that the stories were cut about and pasted together so you had the plots of two books jammed into one two-hour programme and couldn't do justice to either.
I've not yet dared buy the new book by Mr Rankin, although I did pick it up and have a look at it. I've read some of his books under his pseudonym and couldn't really get along with those.
Rebus is just...well. If I had to choose between Reginald Hill and Ian Rankin, I would be in big trouble, because I love Andy Dalziel just as much - and Warren Clarke was BORN to play the Fat Man!

Just finished the new Ian Rankin book, Doors Open last night at around 12.30 am. I have read it over the last two days. I guess it was one of those books that they actually say " can't put it down ". Different to Rebus I would say - again set in Edinburgh - but still a good read. I recommend it.

I agree totally. Funnily enough the John Hannah TV stories were truer to the books but he was not Rebus for me either. The Ken Stott stories, as rightly pointed out, were a mix of a number of books and kind of spoiled it for me. Ken is the man for Rebus, however.

I have read all the Rebus stories but have never seen the series, I love John Hannah but he wasn't Rebus so I didn't watch. I'll have to look out for the newer ones. Warren Clarke I have adored since I saw him in David Lodge's 'Nice Work' and yes, he was born to be Andy Dalziel. What I have watched is 'Wire in the Blood' a fine series, interesting, reasonably accurate and positive portrayal of an Aspie there, strangely enough, couldn't get on with the books.
