RUDOLF
Have you ever wondered how Rudolf got his nose?
Or if he has to polish it to make sure that it glows?
The fact is once upon a time, when he was very small,
Little baby Rudolf had no nose at all.
There was sort of some thing there, where his nose should be,
But not like all the other reindeers that was plain to see.
The Reindeer’s all lived close to Santa, and looked forward to the day,
When Santa might choose one of them to help to pull his sleigh.
New Reindeers were not chosen, till they were nine or so,
So Rudolf thought, “Good, that will give my nose a chance to grow.”
When he was five he started school, and even learnt to fly,
Hoping one day he’d be chosen to pull Santa through the sky.
Rudolf waited very patiently, but when he got to eight,
And still a nose had not appeared, he got in quite a state.
His antlers grew just like they should, big, and strong, and fine,
But of his little reindeer nose not a single sign.
“I wonder why my nose won’t grow,” Said Rudolf, close to tears.
“All my friends have got them, they’ve all had theirs for years.”
“I wish I knew the answer,” Said his Father with a sigh.
“We’d better go back to the Vet, to try to find out why.”
The vet examined Rudolf, and said, “Bad news I fear,
You’ll never have a proper nose that much is very clear.”
“But Rudolf, don’t get too upset, I’ve got a friend in town,
With lots of different noses, because he used to be a clown.”
“I’ll go down in the morning to see what he can do,
So by tomorrow afternoon I may have news for you.”
“I hope the Clown can help me,” Said Rudolf to his Dad.
“Because to never, ever, have a nose will make me sad.”
The next day Rudolf and his dad went back to see the vet,
Who met them with a smile and said, “I’ve got the best news yet!”
“I told my friend about you Rudolf, and how you hoped one day,
That Santa Clause would choose you, to help to pull his sleigh.”
“I told him how upset you were because you had no nose,”
My friend got three down from a shelf and said, “Here, give him those.”
“I don’t need them now that I am not a Clown,” he said.
“The only problem I can see is, all of them are RED.”
Rudolf looked at all three noses then chose the brightest one.
“I think I like this one the best, please, can I try it on?”
“The Clown called that his special one, the best one that he had,
But he didn’t say how special,” the vet told Rudolf’s dad
“Are you sure you want to do this Son?” Rudolf’s Father said.
“Won’t all the others laugh at you, because your nose is red?”
“They do that now Dad.” Rudolf said, “and lots of names they call,
But I’d rather have a bright red nose, than have no nose at all.”
He asked the vet to fit it on, and when it was in place,
What he saw in the mirror brought a smile back to his face.
They thanked the vet, said goodbye, and walked home through the park.
So by the time they reached their house, the evening was quite dark.
As they walked up the garden path and stepped upon the porch,
Rudolf’s artificial nose lit up just like a torch.
All around the garden, as far as they could see,
Everything was lit by Rudolf’s nose, his Dad said, “Oh dear me.”
“Now we know what makes it special,” Rudolf’s father said,
“I hope it doesn’t stop you sleeping when you go to bed.”
“I hope so too Dad,” Rudolf said, but as they walked through the door,
His nose went back to normal, just like it was before.
Next day at school he saw his friends “Just look at me”, he said,
“I’ve got a nose now just like you except that mine is RED!”
“It’s also rather special, and lights up in the dark,
This evening I will show you if you meet me in the park.”
They all turned up just after tea, to see this special thing.
And as they stood there Rudolf’s nose, just switched on with a PING!
Rudolf said, “It only works outside, when everywhere is dark.”
His friends all said, “It really is like daylight in this park.”
Next night a knock came on the door and there stood Santa Clause,
He smiled and said, “Now then young man, let’s see this nose of yours.”
So Rudolf took him out to show just what his nose could do.
And when he saw it Santa said, “I’ve got a job for you.”
“I’d like you to lead the Reindeers who fly and pull my Sleigh,
With your nose all lit up like that we’ll never lose the way.”
So Christmas Eve if you see Santa fly above your town,
Remember Rudolf’s bright red nose, was given by a clown.
