Father Tom lead the service on the beach for Aging Hippy's dad this evening.
It was very casual - lots of bright colours, shorts and flipflops or trunks and flipflops and a shirt for the men, bright sundresses for the women.
Fr Tom works for Vitas, the company that provided hospice care to AH's dad during the last six months of his life. C was not terribly religious, but he found great entertainment in questioning Fr Tom and in their discussions. It was clear from what Tom said today in his words at the service that he became enormously fond of C; he said he counted him among his friends, not just as a client.
It was a beautiful and shortish service...some of us felt there was a little too much of the religious element, but on the whole I felt it was reasonably well-balanced. I felt very calm and peaceful, and was very comforted by it.
AH, his son, and the three grandsons swam out beyond the breakers with a small amount of C's ashes and some yellow daisies - C and his wife's favourite flowers - and scattered the ashes and dropped the flowers.
I should mention, the memorial service took place on the beach at Indialantic in Melbourne, Florida, at 6.30 pm Friday, hence the shorts, dresses and flipflops. It was what C wanted, no church service or sad faces and dark clothes.
It was simple, beautiful and heartfelt.
Thank you from both of us to all of you who have left messages and responded to my posts. Your support is very much appreciated, and very much helped.
With love,
Michelle and Dave.
