Now don't get me wrong, I love wildlife in the garden.
We feed the birds, have squirrels and foxes visit without any problems but I'm not sure I'm keen on the wildlife that PMS spotted by the water butts today.
A large grass snake! I know they're harmless but I haven't got the wellies someone is getting me for my birthday yet!
I can see I am going to be going around the garden full of trepidation now
I'll try to get a picture sometime if I'm ever brave enough to get within a decent distance!

How do you know it was agrass snake? It could have been a highly venomous one that has escaped from a nearby collection...sweet dreams

PMS telled me it was a grass snake and when he came in, he checked in a book we have - OK?

Profuse apologies Ives, I would never have mentioned the 'S' word if I'd thought you'd be looking on here.
If we do get a pic, I'll PM you to warn you where it is so you can keep away

I think it is a very fab thing indeed! Just remember that they are protected by law - you can move them, or keep it and raise it in captivity (though why you should want to do that I cannot imagine) but they cannot be sold or traded. Ivy - do NOT click on this link!

We won't be disturbing it.
I just don't like the idea that we could surprise eachother (us and the snake) when we are gardening!
Saying that, we haven't seen it since.

Saying that, we haven't seen it since. It will be just as keen to avoid you. Making a fair amount of noise when walking around the garden should be enough to keep it away.
If you do want to get to know it better or maybe get some photos, most snakes enjoy slightly sour milk, but they are very shy. It takes a lot of patience, but put out a saucer of milk often enough and always in the same place and it should learn some trust.
I know I'll never convince ivy, but they are beautiful animals. I'm deeply envious.

Thanks for the advice Fi.
I don't think I will be encouraging it but PMS might well!
I shall be stomping about the garden to make sure that we don't meet unexpectedly!
