or more specifically, herbs that have turned 'bushlike'. In spring last year I planted out about a dozen 'regular' herbs to fill an area that I had cleared. All flourished quite well and provided us until the autumn. I had no idea whether any needed 'cutting back' so I left them for this year and the result was poor. Only the chives and sage seemed to do anything (the latter becoming triffid-like). The parsley completely faded. Without going through each plant individually, is there a general rule of thumb about caring for herbs to help them prosper annually?

A Rule of Thumb - sorry not as far as I am aware as some are Annuals whilst others keep coming back year after year. Rosemary, Sage and Thyme for instance are shrubs which need pruning back each year if to be useful.
Sage I cut back late Autumn or even later if still usable. Parsley needs growing a bit at a time and picking regularly. Though I have managed to keep some on occasions it is usually seen as an annual. Mint on the other hand need the equivalent of a garden ASBO and confined to a buried bucket and even then it will escape.
