anyone out there who can help me please. My gardenia sits happily indoors, flowers, does everything right - until about 10 days ago when the leaves started to die off. It looks as though it has a possibly a mould or fungus, the leaves have gone sort of waxy ! does anyone have the slightest idea as to what I am talking about ? and any suggestions gratefully received. thanks mon x

Is it wilting or otherwise looking sick?

I had a look, there is no wilting, but it does have some yellow discolouration round the outside of some of the leaves. it doesnt look sick, it just doesnt look glossy and well like it has been and there are now no buds on it at all, whereas before there were loads. thanks for any help mon

Have you been watering with hard water? This can cause acid-loving plants (such as Gardenias) to suffer.

have been watering with rain water mostly, however there were a few times I used tap water, I repotted it about 2 months ago and it flourished before it went downhill. i am totally stuck for answers, but i do appreciate the input !

someone told me recently that you should never use tap water on house plants, and funnily enough since i've been using filtered water (when i change the water filter i use the first jugfull to give them a soak) my yukka/spider have thrived. mind you the spider plant is a bit pot bound. xx

I assume that you have changed nothing? Its position or the amount of water/feeding/light it gets?

its in the same place as its always been, maybe it is because I used tap water a couple of times, but I cant work out why that would have such a drastic effect, I thought about feeding it with a liquid feed ? *carries on scratching head for answers, which doesnt get her very far ! *

Sorry if I am stating the obvious, but I assume that there is no sign of pests? Spider mite, leaf scale and so on? Otherwise, it is puzzling.

Having said that, they are well known for being tempramental and need just the right humidity, temperature and neither too little or too much watering. How long have you had the plant before it began to look distressed? And did that distress co-incide with sudden changes in temperature?

there are no mites or anything crawling around or attaching themselves to the plant, i have checked that. I've had the plant for over 6 years and up till recently, about a month ago now it was happy as larry, thats whats confused me ! Thank you for all your help, I will feed it and carry on doing what I'm doing and it will either sink or swim ! mon x

how's it going Mon, i tried with a gardenia once but after the initial flowering it went down hill fast and never recovered, but then i never realised you dont' water plants with hard tap water and it's hard to get much harder than the stuff coming out of my taps!

update is that it is still going, there are still some leaves dropping off and going brown, but i am ever hopeful, the sun is out this morning so I am going to put it outside for the day and water it with rain water and just keep hoping ! usually there are lots of buds on it by now, but there is still nothing, so i am a bit dubious , but who knows !!! mon x
