What this tree might be? We see them every summer in Portugal and I always forget to ask. They are so beautiful when in blossom.

I may be wrong Dora, but I think it's a jacaranda. They're gorgeous.

If, close up, the flowers look like this: Then a Jacaranda is indeed what it is.

If, close up, the flowers look like this: Then a Jacaranda is indeed what it is. I used to frequent the Jacaranda Club in Government Road, Nairobi, in 1954. It was a kind of drop in centre for those of us in the army who were in Kenya for the Mau Mau emergency. While there I played 78 classical records. I first heard there Dvorak's New World Symphony and Aaron Copeland's El Salon Mexico'. Sorry, that doesn't help to identify to beautiful blue-flowered tree.

Aren't they lovely trees. I saw them in Australa, mainly around the middle eastern coastal region.

There is an Avenue lined with them on the way into the City. They look lovely. Others are around, but this Avenue of lovely older houses and buildings with this hue of the lilac/blue of the Jacarandas is wonderful.

Relics of the old decency, Michael .. Ahh, the old decencies - those dear, dead days of colonialism and oppression. Yes my Lord. It was those good old days when even the Army Officers (and I, unlike you, was a humble Corporal in the Royal Signals), who were there to defend the rights of the colonialists, were barred from the Colonial Clubs. They would have lowered the tone, don't yer know?

Do you remember the Norfolk Hotel, Michael? It's still going strong.

Jacaranda as suggested.
LA is smothered with them in the summer. It brings a lovely splash of colour to an otherwise dull and sprawling city.
Our local flower shop in Nailsworth is called Jacaranda. I wonder how many people realise what the name means.

Thank you folks! I've heard of them but never knew what they looked like! You've saved my sanity - well, you know what I mean!
