We grow really healthy plants but all the courgettes go manky before they are big enough to pick. What am I doing wrong.
We try to water thm from below but at the moment with all the rain it has little to do with us.
Any suggestions?

What do you mean by 'manky' Steve? My first thought would be mildew, but without a clearer description I can't be sure.

The fruit starts to grow and then when they get 3-4 inches long start to rot. The leaves are still fine and the plants have new flowers which start to grow into little courgettes but then they start to go manky again.

Steve, when we first grew courgettes we read the veggie Expert book and it said to keep the ground moist but not water over the plant and to use a mulch or some black polythene. It seems to work for us, I wonder if that might help?

Sounds good. The problem is we are not watering from the top. God is doing it for us!

Steve, this could be due to incomplete pollination due to poor weather - try hand pollinating. Or it could be too many fruit on the plant - some just rot because the plant is trying to get rid of the excess. That can be sorted by thinning out the developing fruit. Oh, and as Lily has suggested, it's worthwhile putting down a mulch so that the fruit don't sit directly on the soil. I hope that helps. Fi

Hi Lemanie, In simple no, fingers crossed on what may be the only 3 this year. Memsahib not letting me off. Its my fault, not the lack of a courgette sex life. I simply paid & carried the selected 3 for 2 composts.

Update 2008 well it looks like it will be another sad repeat Mel, I think I'd take it as a sign that you're destined to buy your courgettes in Tesco and use that bit of the veggie patch to grow something else. Sometimes it's best just to admit that some things aren't going to grow for you no matter whether or not you follow all the rules!

I used to look up to them for their otherwise excellent sex-life...
