This morning my fern garden resembled an Australian rain forest. My Dicksonia antarctica was look very much at home in our rain. This year she has eleven fronds, instead of the usual eight. Do others grow these tree ferns?

Yes, I've always been fascinated with that ever since I heard a letter read out by dear old Jack Warner (in the early 1940s) to one of the boys at the front, fighting for Britain. It said, 'You won't recognise young Willy. Since you've been away he's grown another foot.'

That looks so lush Rev. , we have a fern in a pot ( sorry, haven't a clue what it's called !), but I daren't go near it as I'm allergic to the nasty spores it has.

This one is actually in a pot ( a very large one) but I'm sure it's split its sides by now. The surrounding ferns cover up the pot now (except in the winter).

Do others grow these tree ferns? I tried a few years ago, but it succumbed to winter weather. I may try again though, since winters where we are now are much milder - I think they are fantastic looking plants.

However, I did plant it in a pot (so that I could move it to the greenhouse in the winter) and placed it quite close the house - where it would be warmer. I didn't move it to the greenhouse the first winter - and it survived, so I've never moved it since. This year it stayed green and healthy until February when the snow caused it to blacken and wither. I then cut off the fronts and later in the spring new ones started to unfold from the middle of the plant. Every autumn I stuff dead fern fronts down the centre of it, and it seems to keep it frost free. I've had it for nine years- in the same place.

what a beauty Rev, i'm slightly jeoulous! x All I did was to put it in a pot and place it where it is now. In dry weather I pour water (this hasn't taken much of my time this year). Otherwise I just cut off the old fronds when they die.

I know - you've got them growing wild around you. My son, when he lived in Rotorua bought them for 2$ each. This one cost me £60 some years ago, and it was half price.

Actually Rev, I have just looked, and mine is a different variety to yours! Mine I would have grown as a house plant in England! Still looks OK though!
