Tyg2 and I will be starting on our veggie plot tomorrow. I will be getting some soil improver, tomato plants, stawberry plants and salad stuff.
He is getting excited.
I will be doing the digging!

Went to pants plus (plants plus, garden centre type place) and got 3 different tomato plants, some cucumber plants, beetroot, lettuce (mixed), a selection of herbs and some strawberries. Got the bag of cow manure, opened the car windows and set off home.
I now have in 2 plots about 3ft long by 1 1/2 ft wide my veggies! Tyg2 really enjoyed the planting. He put the strwberries into a hanging basket (note to self: need more strawberry plants!) and helped plant out when we had decided what went where!
How long till I can have fresh salad? !!

That sounds great Smiffy, however it does sound like an awful lot of plants in a small area - they will crop, but they'd probably do better with more space, if that's possible. One thought, make sure you collect every last tomato - in the climate you're in they grow incredibly fast and, if one or two fall to the ground and are not removed, they can end up as weeds all over your garden - I know because it happened to me. They were a bloomin' nuisance.

It was mainly for tyg2, he wanted to grow something that would be eaten other than lemons! He finds them a bit sour! As for the tomatoes, I have done that before! We planted into grow bags one year then emptied the grow bag onto the garden. We had tomatos amongst the flowers that year!

We planted into grow bags one year then emptied the grow bag onto the garden. We had tomatos amongst the flowers that year! Your mention of lemons reminds me of cumquats - have you tried them yet? If not I do recommend them - they are easy to grow in a relatively small space. Although they are too sour to eat raw, they make the best marmalade ever, plus, soaked in brandy and sugar for three months, taste fabulous with vanilla icecream. One other thought, which you may well already know about, but young beetroot leaves make a tasty addition to salads, so can be enjoyed along with the lettuce before the roots are ready, or even if they bolt, which is always a potential hazard in a hot climate Good luck to TYG2 - I think it's super to introduce TYGs to gardening - it sows the seeds (boom boom) of what can be an absorbing interest for life.
