Thought that would get some attention We have just built this in our garden > And now need some suggestions as to what we could grow up and over it. We would like a combination of all year round cover and then Spring to Autumn flowering. Note: the pic is from the catalogue (it did not look so big in their brochure as it is in real life). Many thanks

Climbing roses and clematis make good combinations - to extend the flowering time. Honeysuckles are good but only bloom for a few weeks. I like a few annual climbers too.

We like the look of Clematis Armandii but are concerned about mixing early and late flowering types due to the diffferent pruning regimes. Any advice on this aspect of Clematis growing? We have them in the garden but keep them apart.

What I should have mentioned is that the arch will be in full sun during the morning hours but in dappled shade from then on.

Has anyone any experience with this one that - from the description - seems interesting? Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' Common name: Old man's beard, traveller's joy, virgin's bower.

We have them in the garden but keep them apart. I don't see why that should be a problem - C. armandii is relatively easy to distinguish from other clematis - otherwise a discreet tag, with pruning requirements, would ensure each plan got the pruning it required. The scent of C. armandii is sufficiently attractive to make up for any minor hassle. Just avoid C. montana at all costs - they're lovely if you have the space (like a tree or a long fence) for them to grow, but otherwise take over in a very short time.
