This is my first post and the subject matter tells me I'm getting a bit anal! Not for me sexy stories or witty comments, no its about asking if anyone has tried saving their sunflower seed heads for the birds. Two years ago I left them in the shed to dry and ended up with a shed full of happy, full mice! Last year I strung them up on the beams [the sunflower heads not the mice ----although upon reflection maybe I need to rethink that one] and still got a shed full of happy mice! Also any idea's how long I should leave them drying. [Just in case I have to sit up for a period at night with a torch and a shotgun [quicker than a noose and infinitely more satisfying.

I just leave mine to dry on the plant as long as I can (as the heads droop over to help the drying process) and then just leave them in the garden and something soon makes quick work of them!
Welcome by the way!
;D

Welcome Kay.
To save your mice getting too rotund, the only thing I can think of is to put the heads in a tightly sealed plastic box with lots of air holes in it.
I keep runner bean 'beans' in the airing cupboard to dry out but you wouldn't want to encourage the little darlings to come indoors and find your porridge!
I wonder perhaps if there is a way that you can oven dry them very slowly and then seal in a plastic box over the winter?

Thank you! Thats very helpful I never thought of leaving them on the plant for the birds to find Sharon why do I always have to make things more complicated than they need be? Mind you there would have been a slight problem with that this year. My Sunflowers gained the proportions of respectably sized trees [they obviously do well on monsoon rainfall]. Could well have brought the gable end of the house down with them if they were felled in a high wind!
Thanks for the bean idea too. Too late this year we've eaten them all but have noted for next year. Happy Gardening!

Hello Kay.
Nothing to add about the sunflower seeds but welcome to the site.
I must admit to being lazy in that department as I go into my local pet shop and buy a bag of sunflower hearts every now and again.
My little visitors love them.
The ones I buy in Tesco for myself I put on my Shreddies in the morning. ( other whole wheat breakfast cereals are available....)

I just need to make sure I don't get the bags mixed up....
