As opposed to Rubbish tips I suppose! A new garden, a new venture. I have always wanted to try and cultivate a herb garden and a vegetable plot. The former is being planned at this moment and will become a reality in the spring. The vegetable area was started last year by Normas Tyg with some success-toms, beets, carrots and beans. I now want to extend this area to its full potential (size-wise about 10m 2) Anyhow I digress (I'm so excited about it) We are a family of five and there are chickens, guinea pigs, and a rabbit. Is it okay to compost the animals bedding/waste in with the family food waste. Should this also have garden waste added to it, and is this best done in a composter (which we have) or in a heap? Any advice etc etc

Animal droppings & bedding? Yes. Vegetable peelings? Yes. Food waste (plate waste)? No. Cat/dog manure? No. Garden waste? Yes.
aim for a nicely mixed composter of pile...if you have the space.

I prefer a compost bin some counels sell them for around a tenner but one made of wood or wire and covered with a bit of old matting works well too. it's a good idea to layer with straw or shredded paper. Keep wet and warm where possible and the secret ingedient... pee on it at every opportunity it's a great activator. You could even have a ..... no don't go there it would only upset the neighbors!
