My daughter was given a flower arrangment this week that contained a strange flower. Its has white petals with a tinge of pink in the centre It looks a bit like a rose but the flower head below the petals is vaguley sprout like with small leaves closed up. The stalk is also similar to a sprout. Any ideas?

Paul, what colour are the stalk and leaves?
I have a plant in mind that has become popular recently in bunches of flowers, but it has purply foliage.

Have you a picture of it?

It sounds as though it may be some sort of mallow - but without an image that's in the wild guess category.

Like what these are? Unfortunately I didn't get a picture, but the flower looks very much like the creamy coloured one with a pink centre in this picture. There are no leaves around the flower as in this one but below the flower head it looks a bit like a Brussels Sprout and the stalk is very similar to a sprout as well.

Thanks to all of you. I can now tell her when she has finished admiring the arrangment she can serve it up with dinner

They are edible, particularly when young - they have a strong flavourmuch the same as kale. I often make a glorious pizza using kale - I learned it from an Italian friend who comes from the south of Italy - she also makes a brilliant cabbage pie! I've put the recipe on the foodie board.
