It's sort of gardening related. Can birds smell? I know if you leave a chicken out of the fridge long enough it will , but what I really mean is do birds have a sense of smell? I was just wondering if they rely on eyesight to find food or whether they smell it too.

Not sure about that one Amnesia!
I have a budgie and he wouldn't have anything to do with me when I had a sore throat for a few days and had a croaky voice.
I thought he would recognise me by sight or smell as well but apparently not!
Sooooz xxxx

Clever you PP, thanks for that. The question arose as I put out some finely grated cheese for the wrens this morning. I just wondered if they would be able to smell it. Cheers

They have no taste buds...Chilli flakes can be safely mixed with bird seed. the chilli does put the squirrels off the bird food...I think a sense of smell in the avians would also be missing.

It is possible to buy chilli treated bird seed (they eat it with, well, relish) the squirrels are not so keen...

Sea birds have salt glands (to shed the excess salt in their diet) attached to these holes.
