Orchids

A very nice young man has bought me a potted orchid today, the only problem I have is that I've never grown one before .

Can anyone who's had one give me any advice on the kind of conditions I should keep it in, and how wet/dry I should keep it etc. Also, how long should I expect it to last?

I shall be googling later, but I just wondered if anyone had any hands on experience of them.

I bought my daughter one in march for her birthday,Its still alive lost its first flowers but soon had others.
they seem to thrive on neglect don't want too much water about once a week,she keeps it in the bathroom, or the kitchen should be ok.
