... but surely it shouldn't be blooming in early February - in fact it was out during the end of January (or perhaps earlier but I was abroad until 29th January). Can anyone remind me of the name please? I do remember that after the species comes 'macedonia'

Rev I'm sure it's KNAUTIA MACEDONICA (you were nearly right). Flower heads usually are dark red. It is a member of the scabious family but the leaves on a scabious are divided. And no, it shouldn't be in flower until July.

And no, it shouldn't be in flower until July. Thank you so much Patacake. Yes, that's the one, but I didn't realize it belonged to the scabious family. Last year it also flowered very early, then it had a rest and bloomed like made in July. I didn't realize that some of my plants are naughtier than others, even if they come from Macedonia.
