In the conifer in my back garden (cat free thanks to Jester) I have a lady blackbird roosting on the nest! She is at my eye level and if I stand well back and peer in I can see her! She is mostly leaning back napping! The nest is quite close to the edge of the branches but hasn't been dislodged in the recent winds so I am hoping for a nice little brood!

My broody Mrs has deserted the nest and it is empty. But we have a gaggle of Blackbirds and 2 Robins waiting for me in the morning to put out currants, chopped peanuts or this morning it was "Suet-to-Go" with mixed insects! Yummy!

The swallows got back from their african holliers yesterday. Does anyone know if they re-use their old nests, or always build new ones? I'm hoping for the former, since there were two nests last year that were at eye level, and therefore all their doings were easy to observe.

I think they re-use, Fi. We have some that come back year after year round at the hall near where I live.
They are a lovely sight.

We have swallows, return every year, the first appeared two days ago and we were worried it was going to be on its own but this morning I was pleased to see two on the wire chirruping away. I love the happy twitter they make. They sometimes reuse their old nests, but if they don't, they build another within feet of last year's. They like to return to their old site if not nest.

Thanks Sharon and Shemmy - I went to check the nests and a robin has built its nest on top of one of them! So there may be an avian punch-up in the offing - if not, they'll have to take their case for nesting rights vs illegal squatters to the ombudsbird.
