One of my favourite authors, creator of the Wheel of Time series, died yesterday.
I mentioned in another thread that he was gravely ill and there was a possibility book 12 - the last book in the cycle - may never be completed.
It is not yet finished, although work on it carried on up until his death. He has shared the bones of the story with family members, and no doubt in due time a completed version of the book will be published.
He was a man of tremendous courage, and great faith, who created a fantasy world of depth and rich detail. Inevitably fantasy writers end up being compared to Tolkien: Jordan's work is perhaps not quite so literary but his characters and their journeys are no less compelling and engaging. In some ways it's more grown up than Tolkien, I suppose, and given there are 11 books in existence in the WoT series at this point, it is perhaps unsurprising that his characters are so fully-developed and detailed.
I would recommend reading the entire series to anyone who has a love of sword and sorcery fantasy fiction. There's so much more to it than just that, but that's broadly I suppose the genre into which the books fall.
RIP.

Thanks Tiger.
I started reading them a while ago and I think I got as far as book 5 and I ran out of steam because they did not seem to be going anywhere.
Maybe I will have another try.
