Just outside my study window grows a couple of roses. The nicely scented Margaret Merril and one of David Austin's earlier, but less perfumed one, 'Mary Rose.' I noticed on Saturday that there were some nice buds on this rose but today I see that it's started. I find this rose is one of the first to bloom, and certainly it keeps going until Christmas, and the year before last, it went on almost into the New year. What do others think of this rose.

I'm not a lover of roses Rev, but the foliage on that looks perfect, and the bloom is so full, for the first of the season...I reckon I can almost smell it from here.

That's kind of you 'Perfect Peek'. The foliage on that one stays pretty healthy - which I can't say for Margeret Merril, which suffers dreadfully from black spot. But to say that you are not a lover of roses is almost beyond belief - and a sweet young English Rose like youself, too.

If it does what you wanted it to do what was wrong with that? Which rose is it please? and do you live in the South of France?

The reason I'm not keen on roses is that they seem to drop their blooms all over the ground, plus all the blackspot and greenfly you have to contend with. When we moved into our current home, there were 14 roses in the front garden, a space which is roughly 20ft by 25ft, and I tolerated them, but whittled them down one by one ...some had been there since the house was built so I reckoned they'd had a good innings. HOWEVER ! I have a small area in the back garden which I planted up with all new plants last year and the dratted slugs and snails had a feast on them, only 2 survived, and one of those I've rescued and potted up for now. So, needing something to fill the gap I plumped for an orange/apricot rose called Simply the Best, and although it's only been in 10 days it seems to be thriving ! I have to say Hubby was astounded when I said I wanted a rose there, lol. Here's a pic from online of the blooms I can expect:

I hope your new one (I don't know it) does well and doesn't do all those things that you don't like roses to do.
