Just finished this - and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone who's experienced the usual round of chain hotels, fast food joints, restaurants, etc. In the USA (or in ths country).
The idea came from a comdey tour the author did where everywhere he went was ownded by one chain or another. I can empathise with this - during the several months I was commuting to the US* I believe I visited a non-chain establishment once (and that was in Canada)!
In the book he attemopts to drive coast-to-coast using only "mom & pop" motels, gas stations and stores. He almost succeeds as well! He once wound up having to use chain supplied gas after they ran out, and did have a blow-out when things went wrong.
Oh, and personally I love the car - it;s a Ford Torino (remember Starsky's car?) but the station wagon.
A thoroughly good read.

*It's true about commuting to the 'States. Used to fly out Tuesday, work Wednesday-Friday, weekend off, work Monday- Wednesday then red-eye back overnight, straight in to the UK office from the airport! Work Thursday, Friday Monday and an hour or two Tuesday, then start again.

I read this a few weeks ago, and concur. It's a thoroughly good read. It made me think: is it possible to do the same thing in the UK? Try going Land's End to John o' Groats without filling up at a chain petrol station - can it be done? The food and shelter, no worries, but petrol? There's a thought.
