...have flowered!
I haven't killed them off! Yippee!
And the peas and beans are clambering merrily up the wicker obelisk thing I managed to jam into the pot, and I had salad grown by me on my sarnie yesterday lunchtime.
I feel quite the gardening success!
Definitely going to turn at least some of the back yard in Germany over to growing veggies - and I am planning on growing my own flowers from seed next year, none of this getting hundreds of euros of plants from the Hornbach!
Will try growing tomatoes from seed, too.

Congratulations! I suggest that you get yourself a propagator and make sure it's one that includes temperature control for plants like tomatoes - it will make a huge difference to the number of seeds that germinate. One caution though - some seeds come in packets of a hundred or more. If you put any of them in the propagator, don't be tempted to crowd the seeds in their container - it's a real danger if the seeds are very small. If you do overcrowd them, the seedlings with be very leggy and prone to rot. There are all sorts of tricks to avoid this happening - I just mix the seeds with a bit of fine sand and/or loam, and spread the mixture around. It will also be worthwhile making a dedicated seedbed - fine tilth and weed free - to germinate some of the less fussy varieties.
