Definitely Anstruther. Fife - near enough to St Andrews to enjoy the town but far enough away to avoid the American and Japanese tourists/parents of students. But then I am biased Anstruther Holiday FlatPlenty around for the whole family regardless of weather. Oops sorry you said England. Just to show Mittens is not the only smart one - Click

And so far, I'm the only one placing a recommendation without a personal motive. BTW if you're wondering where Barburgh castle is; it's just along the road from Bamburgh castle - whoops!

I would recommend a long weekend with Snowy in Cornwall. If your lucky Idiot will be to busy and you'll get away with having sensible conversations with the chickens. Go to the local pub and say hello to the lovely pool playing bikers.

Somewhere on the East Coast of Yorkshire. We stayed at West Ayton (with the portable palace) and spent a lovely long weekend with good weather visiting Filey, Whitby, Staithes etc which are all beautiful and slightly less well travelled places than Scarborough etc. Well at that time of year they were - we went in early October and the weather was gorgeous, so hopefully you'll have better luck in September.

I love Whitby! That's one place I really miss in the UK - not been there for three years now, prior to that I'd visited nine years in a row. Great place.
The Isle of Wight is nice, too.
