SHORT STORY
Ellie sat on the garden wall, legs dangling. She was thirteen and her brother Jack was eleven. They had put sibling rivalry aside to discuss the problem in hand.
“What shall we do?” asked Jack, worriedly. “ I know there’s something wrong. I can tell by the way they go quiet whenever we’re about.”
“Yes, I noticed that too,” Ellie agreed. “ And have you heard them whispering when they’re in the kitchen?”
“ You don’t think there’s anything…..wrong…? You don’t think one of them is ill? Oh my gosh! You don’t think…..?” Jack’s eyes were wide.
“ We have to be strong Jack. Whatever it is, we’ll come through it” Ellie said, remembering some of her mother’s words. She was the big sister, after all and Jack was just a child. What on earth would they do if their parents were getting a….. divorce? She didn’t voice this to Jack but the thought had occurred to her and the way things had been lately, it seemed like a real possibility.
“ Ellie! Jack! Come inside a moment.”
They went inside and sat down, dreading what was to come as their parents stood in front of them.
“ Well, kids, we’re not sure how you’ll take this. It came as a bit of a shock to us and we didn’t quite know how to tell you” said Dad, pausing for a moment.
“Your mum’s pregnant and you’ll be having a baby sister or brother in a few months!”

Excellent, Nuala! I love the way you rise to a challenge - now that's a really short story!
I'll say one thing for you, girl, you're consistent. Everything you write is so blimmin' good!
;D

I usually don't know when to stop and was very surprised to have done it in the allocated 250 words. I thought it had sunk into oblivion. Thank you for the kind comments x

That was a cracker. I haven't tried the 250 word short yet but I'll come up with something.

250 words are not a lot to play with, you did well with them. Well done.

Brilliant - A rambler like myself finds it so impressive when you can come up with the goods in so few words.
