PASS THE SALT PLEASE….
They’d gone to great lengths to hide it from the boy. They never argued in his presence and were overly civilised to one another ….Pass the salt, please.
When the parting eventually came and the front door slammed on their fifteen year marriage, she sank down on the first stair and wondered how she’d break it to the lad. It would be just like a bolt out of the blue to him….
She heard a sound behind her and turning, saw their son – the only good thing to have come out of her marriage – standing at the top of the stairs in his pyjamas. He stood in silence, looking down at her.
“ I’m afraid your dad’s gone, Love”
After a few seconds, he said “ Well, perhaps the atmosphere around here will be a bit better from now on” and turning on his heel, went back to bed where she thought it best to leave him for a while. He would know where to find her when he needed her.

Good one, Nuala. Kids always see it/tell it like it is, don't they?
