I have planned to do it as a supplementary source of income, but I have a suspicion it may be too much like hard work and very little income. Great way to be out in the wilds, though!

yes, indeed it is hard work, but keeps you fit, and, so nice to be out in the fresh air....and so exciting when you find a tiny tiny speck of the real stuff......

I had a colleague once who spent as much time as he could panning his 'secret' stretch of Scottish river. He carried around his largest flakes in a sealed test tube in his pocket just to prove that gold can still be found in them thar hills. His ambition was eventually to pan enough gold for a wedding ring for his daughter. I hope he was successful because it is such a wonderful idea.
