I once knew a gnome who lived in a wood,
Who tried to be naughty whenever he could.
He just couldn't bear to see things that were right
He'd change them around, then nip out of sight.
Everyone wondered just what had gone wrong,
Things they'd put right didn't stay right for long.
Gates that were fastened would blow in the wind,
Things hung on walls would soon come unpinned.
This naughty gnome who's name was Unfix,
Never got tired of playing his tricks.
He'd start very early before people awoke.
And look round to see what would be his first joke.
Very early one morning he nearly got caught,
Things didn't work out for him as he thought.
A man almost caught him down in a shed,
When Unfix had thought he was safely in bed.
Unfix had to hide behind the shed door,
Or else the man would have seen him for sure.
For over an hour this man was quite busy,
Until standing so still made Unfix quite dizzy.
At long last the man went out of the shed,
Didn't leave the door open, but closed it instead.
All Unfix could do was sit on a sack,
And patiently wait for the man to come back.
He waited and waited most of the day,
Then at last he heard footsteps coming his way.
Quickly he jumped back down to the floor
Ready to make a dash out the door.
Unfix escaped as fast as he could
When a woman came into the shed with some wood.
She let out a scream and ran back to the house,
Frightened by what she thought was a mouse.
Unfix never stopped running until he got home
And vowed the next day to be a changed gnome.
He tried and tried very hard the next day
But somehow the tricks just kept coming his way.
I really and truly must try to be good
Thought Unfix one day as he walked through the wood.
All these naughty things I do are absurd.
"I know!" I'll call in and see Olly Bird.
Doc. Olly Bird was a kind wise old owl,
But when he saw Unfix he gave him a scowl.
He said to Unfix, "I have heard about you,
You cause people trouble whatever you do."
Unfix then told him he wanted to change,
The Doc said, " That shouldn't be hard to arrange.
Just go out each day and do things that are good,
And try to behave like a good gnome should."
As he walked slowly home through the wood,
Unfix thought only of things that were good.
He changed completely the very next day
And never again a bad trick did he play.
All the bad things he'd put wrong he put right,
And quite often worked late into the night.
He was watched very closely by Doc. Olly Owl,
Who never again had reason to scowl.
