Woodstock Pétanque Club (Stockport) is your local club for French boules – a bit like bowling, only with steel balls rather than woods.
The club hosts the Spring Pairs Tournament on 29th March 2009 in Alexandra Park, Edgeley.
Chairman and regular player, Selwyn Forster, says “It’s a real family event. Pétanque can be played by people of any ability and all ages – from 8 to 80. It’s a way of getting gentle exercise and fresh air as well as meeting friendly people. And the way it goes means it's anyone's guess who can lift the trophy - even beginners!”
“We are delighted to announce that this year we will play for the Bob Taylor Trophy. Bob was a well-respected club member who sadly lost his fight against cancer last year. We feel this is a terrific way of remembering him.”
“We’re really looking forward to it, not least as Bob’s wife June will be playing on the day and Bob’s eldest daughter Beverley will present the trophy to the winners.”
Club Secretary Jackie B says, “Look for us behind the Bowling pavilion. We’re looking forward to welcoming teams from all over the north west, and even from across the Pennines. Play starts at 10.00am and as long as you register beforehand the club can arrange a loan of boules and will try to match up individuals – so you don’t have to enter as a team.”
“The club plays every 2nd and 4th Sunday, from March to October from 1pm and new members and visitors are welcome.”
“You can get as competitive as you like: there is ample opportunity to do so, with tournaments being held regularly throughout the region, particularly during the summer months. However, there is no pressure to play if you prefer the social aspects: come and chat, have a picnic, a glass of wine and enjoy the spectacle!”

There are other Tournaments in 2009, all at Alexandra Park - on 5th July a Triples competition and on 4th October the Autumn Pairs.
