Today I had my first introduction to Volksmarching.
We set off for Ketsch - the next town over - about 10.30 am and by 11 am were on the trail. We'd not decided between the 10 and the 20 km trail at that point, but thought we'd see how we felt at the dividing point between the two.
I developed a blister around the 6 km point, and the Hippy has had a sore knee for a couple of weeks, so we decided on the 10 km walk and set off to finish it. We met an American couple along the way, and chatted with them for a while before they pressed on ahead as we were starting to slow down a little.
The Hippy has entered the Vierdaagse - the Four Day March - at Nijmegen this July. It will be his fifteenth time of entering, and at 60 he now only has to walk 30 km a day on each of the four days. That's only 18 miles!
It was a glorious day, the sun was shining and we heard our first cuckoo of the year on a couple of occasions round the trail. A couple of young men were flying model aeroplanes at the side of the trail at one point, which took us near to the Rhine a little way.
A nice flat trail, so not too difficult to walk, and we finished in just a little bit over two hours which is a respectable enough pace.
I have my first ten event card, and my IVV 500-1000 km card, which I hope to fill up over the next year or two. The plan is to get out for an hour each night during the week where possible, and to do a one or two day event each weekend. I've a way to go to catch up with the Hippy, who has around 8000 km under his belt, but hasn't done much serious walking over the last four or five years thanks to health issues. Those seem to be pretty much behind him, and so we'll be stomping around parts of Europe for the next few months!
